Park Gródek – Polish Maldives

Located just under 60 kilometers from Krakow, Park Gródek is a true oasis of nature and tranquility.

The azure surface of Zalew Wydra, surrounded by picturesque rocks, will enchant anyone. This place owes its existence to the Dolomite Plant “Szczakowa,” which was late with payments. In 1997, as the residents of Jaworzno tell it, the Upper Silesian Power Plant in Gliwice decided to cut off the plant’s access to electricity due to non-payment. The history of the colorful cottages dates back to the 18th century, when the residents of Zalipie adorned their homes with colorful accents. But where did this idea come from? The cottages did not have chimneys, so they quickly became dirty from smoke and soot. Therefore, the women initially whitewashed the stoves and walls. Later on, they began decorating the interiors with colorful paints, and over time, the housewives started painting the external facades and fences as well.

All the paintings are unique and one-of-a-kind; you won’t find two identical cottages in Zalipie. Strolling through the streets of this floral village, it’s impossible not to be amazed by the extraordinary folk art that brings every corner to life. Additionally, for art enthusiasts, the House of Painters (Dom Malarek) organizes art workshops. It’s also worth appreciating Zalipie for its tradition, which survived the times of World War II and is still being preserved.
